(Dan Steinberg/Associated Press)The Screen Actors Guild is set to honour Ernest Borgnine in the new year, announcing that the veteran actor will be the latest recipient of its lifetime achivement award.

The 93-year-old actor has more than 200 films to his credit, and is an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA winner for his star turn in the 1955 film Marty.

The McHale's Navy star has also worked extensively in television and earned multiple Emmy nominations, most recently for his guest turn on the finale of the long-running TV medical drama ER.

Borgnine, who started his career on the stage and in television after serving with the U.S. navy in the Second World War, continues to work. his latest film is the action thriller Red, set for release in October.

The SAG award is presented annually to an individual who fosters the "finest ideals of the acting profession."

Borgnine will receive the honour at the guild's 17th annual awards gala in Los Angeles on Jan. 30, just six days after Borgnine's 94th birthday.

"Whether portraying brutish villains, sympathetic everymen, complex leaders or hapless heroes, Ernest Borgnine has brought a boundless energy which, at 93, is still a hallmark of his remarkably busy life and career," SAG national president Ken Howard said in a statement.

"It is with that same joyous spirit that we salute his impressive body of work and his steadfast generosity."

Past recipients have included:

  • Betty White.
  • James Earl Jones.
  • Julie Andrews.
  • Clint Eastwood.
  • Sidney Poitier.
