Newman, the auto racer, immortalized in painting
Actor Paul Newman was a man who didn't confine his iconic talents to the silver screen.
The late Westport resident was known not only for entrepreneurial philanthropy through his "Newman's Own" brands, as well as his love for auto racing.
Now, Newman's fondness for race cars and the upstate Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, where he competed often, is immortalized in a new painting that depicts the actor with the No. 33 Datsun race car that he drove there during the 1970s.
The portrait will be on sale at the track during its Vintage Festival from Sept. 3-6.
The portrait is by Chris Osborne of New Milford, who specializes in paintings of celebrities and their cars.
The 36-by-44-inch Newman portrait will be sold to benefit Survive the Drive, a not-for-profit organization that teaches automotive safety and survival to drivers of all ages, but focusing particularly on teens.
Bob Green, a race car driver and instructor at the Skip Barber Racing School at Lime Rock Park, has presented Survive the Drive programs to more than 15,000 high school students throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York during the last school year.
