Arnold wins eight-team draw at invite

Dec. 05–PANAMA CITY BEACH — Few schedule changes work out like the one at Arnold High School on Saturday.

The annual Arnold Invitational was changed to a dual tournament. it was the second dual event staged at Arnold, as an eight-team draw won by the Marlins also was contested on Friday.

The Florida High School Athletic Association allows for 18 points for weigh-ins. Once a school meets the measure it can't compete in any more events. Dual tournaments count as two points, but offer much more than traditional elimination events.

fifteen teams were split into four pools, with winners in the championship bracket, second-place teams wrestled for fifth, third-place for ninth and last-place teams for 13th. Each team was guaranteed five matches, and those that also competed Friday had 10 matches this weekend.

Niceville won Saturday's dual tournament over Arnold 42-24. Gulf Breeze beat Marianna to finish third. Mosley was fifth, Bozeman seventh, Rutherford 10th and Bay 14th.

The change in the format helped everyone, Arnold coach Jeff Skipper said. The smaller teams, including Bay with four wrestlers, were afforded more matches than they might receive in a regular tournament. Wrestlers could have been eliminated after two straight losses in a traditional tournament, whereas the dual gave them all five.

The extra work also helped with early stamina. it also helped coaches juggle their lineups, if needed.

Arnold had five wrestlers that were 5-0 on Saturday and finished with 10-0 marks for the two days. They were Joel Ensminger (119-pound weight class), Doug Miner (125), Jayme Atkins (130), Colby Baker (135) and Wesley Bush (189). Zane Turnipseed 9145), Jimmy Lee (152), Keenam McAdams (160) and Tyler Bragg (171) were each 4-1 on Saturday.

Mosley's Dillon Humphrey (125), Ryan Newsome (145), Jimmy Kahle (152) and Trey Pettis (215) were 5-0 on Saturday. Brady Smith (119) was 4-1 and Forrest Lang (135) 3-2.

Brandon Reyes (112) paced Bozeman with a perfect Friday and Saturday. Johnathon Kenney (119), Kris Kenney (160) and Doug Marshall (189) went 4-1. Ryan Unger (171) was 3-2 and heavyweight Tony Bennett (heavyweight) doubled his win total on the season with two victories on Saturday. Bozeman placed third on Friday.

Beau Boggess (103) and Marcus Roberts (215) were 3-1 for Rutherford on Saturday. The Rams had only four matches after Niceville Rocky Bayou failed to appear. Boggess and Roberts were 5-0 on Friday, Logan Perryman (125), Ian Patterson (135), Daniel Nguyen (152) and Michael Ree (160) 4-1 each and Alijah Saffore (171) and John Lee (HWT) 3-2 for the Rams on Friday.
