Could i have a venus flytrap out doors in the winter if it's protected by 2 feet of hey on top of it?
Could i grow a Venus fly trap out doors and have it survive the winter if it's covered by about a foot of leaves on top of it and then 2 feet a hey on top of the bog it's in? I live in Chautauqua county in NY. The temperatures in Chautauqua county in winter are around 20 degrees to -10 degrees.
venus fly-trap plants will survive periods of temperatures only as low as 0celcius. you cannot plant a venus fly-trap out into open soil because it is highly likely that it is not nutrient depleted. you need the correct compost for a venus fly-trap. they grow in Columbia in America in bogland, however they are becoming rarer due to the fact that their requirements are so specific and they are no good at attracting insects -in fact many eat their way out of the traps. Kepp the plant indoors in winter, ideally a cold greenhouse or cloche protection. you can make a small glass and plastic cloche for your plant and place it inside it in winter. Venus flytraps will only survive the winter it you make sure the soil dries out completely between waterings otherwise it will rot. From may – october you can give it a lot of water but be very careful when watering in winter and only repot when the plant is 3x the size of its pot and if you have the correct soil for it.
