On the one hand, today’s Golden Globe nominations sound very familiar – Brad Pitt, Glen Close, Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg. On the one hand, Rooney Mara and Michel Hazanavicius are not exactly household names.

The golden globes are broken into several categories. TV and films are both nominated, and comedies and drama get separate awards. As for the big award, Best Dramatic Film, the names of this year are a bit of a flashback for movie fans. Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is one of the nominees. And Martin Scorsese’s family-friendly 3-D film Hugo is also on the list. Also, making the cut for Best Dramatic Picture is The Help, Moneyball and two George Cloony’s films, The Ides of March and The Descendants.

When it comes to best director, again more Hollywood legends are on the list. But one newcomer to the scene is Michel Hazanavicius, who is nominated for The Artist, which is, for the most part, a silent film.

In the Best Actress category, actor Woody Harrelson read the nominees: “Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs; Viola Davis, The Help; Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady; Tilda Swinton, We Need to Talk About Kevin.”

Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of J. Edgar Hoover garnered him one of the nominations For Best Actor in a Drama. Gerard Butler read the full list of nominees: George Clooney, The Descendants; Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar; Michael Fassbender, Shame; Ryan Gosling, The Ides of March; Brad Pitt, Moneyball.”

In the Best Comedy/Musical category films starring women are well-represented. One early favoured among critics is My Week With Marilyn, starring Michele Williams as Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. On the other side of the tastes spectrum, Bridesmaids was also nominated. Also on the running of Best Comedy/Musical category are 50/50 and Midnight in Paris, which is directed by Woody Allen and stars Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams.

On the TV side of the nomination list, actress Rashida Jones read off the contenders for Best Dramatic Television Series, and there is a 100% chance the winner will be from a cable channel: “American Horror Story, FX; Boardwalk Empire, HBO; Boss, STARZ; Game of Thrones, HBO; Homeland, Showtime.”

When it comes to comedies, broadcast networks are looking a little better. Woody Harrelson read the nominees: “Enlightened, HBO; Episodes, Showtime; Glee, Fox; Modern Family, ABC; New Girl, Fox.”

As for the Best Actor in a Dramatic TV Series, cable channels are again dominating the list. Broadcast have a better chance in the Best Actress drama category. When it comes to performance in TV comedies, 30 Rock once again has the chance to clean up with co-stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin both nominated.
