How do you get from New York to Gettysburg?

How do you get from New York to Gettysburg? Image

I am visiting New York for 5 nights in October and would like to go to Gettysburg. How long does it take to get there? is there public transport or a tour I can do from New York or will I need to hire a car and go myself?

Go south, over the Chesapeake bridge tunnel.

Driving time is about 3-4 hours each way, according to Mapquest. Having driven it, it can be anywhere from 3 to 7 hours, depending on how many trucks crash into flaming wrecks, and how many construction zones on the highway.

My quick search didn't turn up any bus service covering NYC and Gettysburg, so driving is the best bet.

Getting to Philadelpia is easy on public transit. NJ Transit goes to Trenton, and from there SEPA takes you into Philly.
NJ Transit – New York (Penn Station-Trenton)

SEPTA (SE Pennsylvania Transit)

But from there, the closest you can get on Greyhound is Chambersburg, about 20 miles away.

I would recommend a car to see Gettysburg. The battle sites surround the entire town, and it is a drive of around ten miles to see everything.
Here is the National Parks Service site:

Cheapest easiest way would be a weekend car rental special. One way on Amtrak would cost about the same as a car for the weekend.
I've lived in both NYC and Carlisle PA (about 45 min north of Gettysburg).
I could give you directions, but mapquest would probably be more help to ya'.
