Of the many faults found in the webOS operating system on HP and Palm smartphones, the standard Maps app was probably one of the worst. Based on Google Maps, the original app was very slow and lacked the functionality found on other platforms. HP seems to be interested in righting that, however, as it has released the much-improved TouchPad tablet's Bing-based Maps app for use on webOS smartphones.

The new Maps app drops Google Maps as a source and instead runs full steam with Bing providing maps and direction services. It is much faster than before, and offers a number of new features. Users have their choice of standard map view, satellite view, or a birds-eye view. Maps can provide driving, walking, or transit directions, and there is convenient access to recently looked up addresses and saved locations.

HP is offering the new Maps app to all webOS smartphone users, including those with the original Pre, Pixi, and Veer. Users can find it by searching for "Maps" in the HP App Catalog and then installing it on their phones.
