THE master will play the apprentice in an all-Swiss quarter-final after Stanislas Wawrinka blasted Andy Roddick off Rod Laver Arena.

In an awesome display of power serving Wawrinka smashed Roddick 6-3 6-4 6-4 to set up a clash with his good friend and doubles partner Roger Federer. The 25-year-old has understandably lived in the shadow of the game's greatest player throughout his career but on last night's performance the world's 19th ranked player is ready to make a statement.he is the only player in the bottom half of the draw not to drop a set in the first week of the tournament.Wawrinka and Federer joined forces to win the gold medal in the doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The pair have played seven times with Wawrinka's only victory coming on clay in Monte Carlo in 2009. It will be first time two Swiss players have met in the quarter-finals of a major championships."Everybody knows that when Roger plays his best tennis it is hard to beat him," Wawrinka said. "we have played together, practised a lot together and I have known him since I was 16 so we'll see how it is going to be."It was a role reversal for Roddick who normally thrives on riding his big serve to bulldoze opponents. instead Wawrinka was the one sending down the bombs, registering 24 aces to 9.In the opening set he won 15/16 points off his first serves while in comparison the American struggled with his favourite weapon, winning just 36 per cent off his second serve. The amount of winners which came of Wawrinka's racquet was Federer-like, 67-24, with his superb one-handed backhand reeling off 18 winners whereas Roddick, the No.8 seed, could manage just five in total from the baseline for the entire evening.Wawrinka, who is coached by Federer's former mentor Peter Lundgren, is on a nine-game winning streak after warming up for this year's Open by winning his first hardcourt title at Chennai. His previous best result at a grand slam came at last year's US Open where he lost in the quarter-finals to Russian Mikhail Youzhny.
