Fundraisers in the Highlands are close to reaching their £3m appeal target to revamp the regimental museum at Fort George

Actor Hugh Grant helped fund-raisers renew their appeal after they revealed they still need to find £350,000 towards the £2.9m revamp of a military museum at Fort George near Inverness.

The Highlanders' Museum is dedicated to the Cameron Highlanders, Seaforth Highlanders, Queen's Own Highlanders and their affiliated regiments.

Grant launched the original funding appeal in November 2010.

His grandfather was depot commander at Fort George after World War II.

Col James Murray Grant, from Inverness, received the Distinguished Service Order for bravery during the war while serving with the Seaforth Highlanders.

High Grant's father, Capt James Murray Grant, also served with a Highlands regiment.

The actor said: "I come from a line of Highland soldiers and used to visit the Fort George museum often when I was young.

"I'm a fervent supporter of this new museum.

"It's tantalising that so much has been raised, and just a bit is still needed."

Grant added: "I've made a donation and I'm hoping there might be others out there who care about the history of these great regiments who might like to do the same."

The revamped museum at the 1700s artillery fort, which remains a working barracks, is scheduled to open in 2013.
