AROUND THE WEB:

♦ In a play that was somewhat similar to Bruins forward Milan Lucic's collision with Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, Rangers rookie Carl Hagelin was called for charging after knocking over Stars goalie Richard Bachman in Tuesday's game. However, in this case, Hagelin touched the puck first and tried to avoid the collision yet still was penalized.

Rangers coach John Tortorella was irate at the officials after the play, and then he offered one piece of advice to his player. "I told him to do it again," Tortorella said. "The goalie's out 20 feet and [Hagelin] is going after the puck. That's his job. So I said, 'Do it again.' "

Hagelin said referees appear to be more sensitive to protecting goalies after Lucic's play. “The refs have been calling those lately after the hit on Miller," Hagelin said. "I felt like I had step there on the goalie and I actually got a shot off, and then I tried to stop and turned to the left. The ref made a decision and there’s nothing more you can do.”

Even Bachman sided with the Rangers when asked about the play. "No way do I blame him for hitting me," Bachman said after registering his first career shutout in his second NHL start. "We both got to the puck at just about the same time, and that's what happens."

♦ According to a study by The Wall Street Journal, Harvard produces more owners in the four major pro leagues than any other college. Seven owners, including Robert Kraft, attended Harvard's business or law school. Georgetown leads in undergraduates who have gone on to become owners, with five. One of them — Dodgers boss Frank McCourt, is on his way out, however.

Not surprisingly, the Ivy League dominates the list, with four owners from Columbia and three each that attended Dartmouth, Penn and Yale.

♦ One day after firing coach Todd Haley, Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli acknowledged that he deserves some blame for the team's struggles this season.

"We have a locker room that has talent," Pioli said. "We also have a good makeup of character in that locker room, but it's abundantly clear that we're not in a spot we need to be with our record where it is and our team in a position it is. I need to do a better job."

♦ The East Carolina football team did not qualify for a bowl game, but the school still wants fans to buy tickets. The Pirate Club sent an e-mail to members asking them to purchase $50 tickets to the "2011 Virtual Bowl" as a way to support the program. The e-mail states that the goal is to sell more tickets than bowl-bound teams from Conference USA and the Big East.

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA: On Dec. 14, 1960, the first expansion draft in baseball history was held. The Red Sox lost four players each to the Los Angeles Angels and Washington Senators. One of the players they lost to the Angels went on to a long career as a manager of four major league teams. Who is he?
