It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Sandra Bullock on the big screen. Her last outing, “The Blind Side,” earned her a Best Actress Academy Award in 2010. That victory was nearly eclipsed by the scandal that ended her marriage to reality star Jesse James months later, after news of his affair with a tattoo model surfaced. Bullock also adopted her first child, Louis, during that tumultuous year.

Nearly three years after “The Blind Side,” Bullock is back in “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” She plays a 9/11 widow and mother of young son Oskar, who has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism.

“It was a no-brainer,” Bullock said of her decision to accept the role, during a Regency Hotel press conference in Manhattan.

Director Stephen Daldry (“Billy Elliot”) made a pilgrimage to Bullock’s Texas home to convince her to take the role.

“I didn’t necessarily want to work at the time that I was approached, but once Stephen came to my home and we talked about the character, I was blown away.

“I was just so happy being a mom, that just became my full priority” she explained.

“I was so good there, whatever the next opportunity that I was given had to be an amazing opportunity for myself and for (Louis). So we had a great time.”

In Jonathan Safran Foer’s best-selling novel, Bullock said, “I loved how she was basically regarded just as a mother. She was not given a life — because it’s through the child’s point of view and often children don’t appreciate parents in the way that they should.”

Oskar misses his beloved father (Tom Hanks) and hates his mother for not being the one to die.

“The way that the story was told through the eyes of Oskar allowed me and so many people to grieve the event,” Bullock said.

“I think that’s what this story is: the allowance to talk about the events that have happened in your life and grieve.”

“Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” opens Friday.
