My Top Five Famous Plumbers

When somebody asks you to name five famous plumbers, you might struggle to add celebrity names to this illustrious trade. A few people might come to mind, but I hope that this list of who I consider to be the top five most famous plumbers will enlighten you to the hidden gems that glint from the bottom of the murky waters of plumbing.

Number one on my list is John Lawrence Sullivan. He was an apprentice plumber before people realised that he had a penchant for boxing, and he went on to become the first heavyweight champion in the world.

Number two is Screaming Lord Sutch, who was going after a career in plumbing before he became a British pop act. After his musical career, he began the Monster Raving Looney party in the UK.

Number three is Matt Monro, a British heart-throb and romantic ballad singer. He rose to fame around the same time Elvis was enjoying the limelight, and managed to attract attention in the the US and UK. Representing Britain, he came second in the 1964 Eurovision song contest. Not bad for a man who started out plumbing.

Bob Hoskins is in at number four. As an actor, he appeared in Mona Lisa and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but before that he was an apprentice plumber, so it's no wonder he was picked to star as Mario in Super Mario Bros, or that he played a plumber in Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

If the above mention didn't clue you in then colour me surprised. At number five is Mario himself. This little fellow has been leaping through pipes for decades, and remains a firm favourite with fans.

So, that's my list of the top five most famous plumbers. I hope you've found it sheds a new light on this profession. It's not just something that people do for their entire lives, but rather a profession that can give people the experience and knowledge they need to box, act, sing, or save fantasy kingdoms from large crocodile lizard turtle type things. Whether you'd want any of these people to fix a blocked drain is debatable, but seeing how people's lives can change is at least interesting.
