Mrs. Thompson was born March 23, 1920, in Davie County to Albert Arndt and Della Caudell Arndt. She retired from the A&P Grocery Stores in the 1970s then worked at the value Shop Clothing Store. Her last job was at the Quick Chek in Tyro, where she made many friends. She was an avid gardener, seamstress, cook and well-known for her talents in needle work. Nellie had the ability to befriend everyone. As many knew her as "Grannie," her greatest gift was the compassion she shared for any and all animals. Sick, healthy, lost or just lonely, she opened her heart and home to dedicate herself to their well-being and safety.

She married William Ashley "W.A." Thompson Sr. in 1940, who passed away in September 1969, and also a brother, John "J.B." Byerly Arndt, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two children, William Ashley "Bill" Thompson Jr. and wife Margaret and Billie Carol "B.C." Thompson Michael, all of Tyro; four grandchildren, Donna Michael King and husband Michael, Bruce Michael, Amy Thompson Jones and Ben Thompson and wife Angie; six great-grandchildren, Meagan Dillon and fiance Kevin Ferrell, Kristin Michael, Jacob Wideman, Kayna Jones, Brendan Thompson and Charlan Penninger, all of Davidson County; brothers-in-law Tyler "Patch" Thompson, Vick Thompson and wife Ruby and Phil Thompson and wife Dee; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and dear friends Channy Teague and Don Michael.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Animal Adoption Rescue Foundation, 311 Harvey St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

A very special thank you goes to the staff of Alston Brook Nursing Home for the outstanding care, love and compassion given to Nellie during her stay at the home.
