At the "Evening with One Tree Hill" event last week, 12 cast members and creator Mark Schwahn fielded a variety of questions from a moderator and capacity crowd at UNCW's Beckwith Recital Hall. The talked about what the show has meant to them, what they think of Wilmington, where "One Tree Hill" films, and what they'd be doing if they weren't acting.

But when talk turned to the upcoming ninth and final season, things turned cryptic.

Moderator Renee Vincent, a UNCW professor who has guest starred on the show, asked each of the cast members to sum up their character's experiences in the final season in one word.

The results range from obvious to silly, random to deep.

Stephen Colletti (Chase) sort of skirted the question, just making a sound from a video he watched on YouTube. Aparently Jackson got the reference, but most of us were confused. (UPDATE: Fans tell me he's saying "Blood" like the kid in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fVDGu82FeQ)

But everyone answered in English, so let's break these down one by one.

James Lafferty (Nathan): "Chair" Could this mean a return to the wheelchair for Nate? Or is the shadow of possibly returning to one still looming over him?

Bethany Joy Galeotti (Haley): "Suspense" If the season 9 clip they unveiled at the event that night is any indication, we are indeed in for a suspenseful season. But for Haley, does this mean more than possibly losing a loved one?

Jackson Brundage (Jamie): "Wow!"The kid's cute, and quite the pitchman, but we can't glean much from this.

Sophia Bush (Brooke): "Juggle"This makes sense, given that last time we saw Brooke, she had a new baby to raise and was relaunching her professional career. Will Julian still be around to help?

Austin Nichols (Julian): "Mogul"Could Julian's career be taking off as well? Or will his competition with a mogul be the reason for his beat-down?

Daphne Zuniga (Victoria): "Sex"Mommy Davis in a torrid love affair? I'm in. Any chance it could be with Dan Scott? Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease.

Lee Norris (Mouth): "Jimmy"This brought a big "Awwwwww" from the crowd. And Schwahn voiced his approval at the choice. Mouth has always been the show's Jiminy Cricket, but what will make him revisit the dead school shooter?

Lisa Goldstein (Millie): "Outburst"Millie's TV job last year led to some pretty funny rants. Will one of those get her in trouble? Or is someone else's outburst causing her grief?

Antwon Tanner (Skills): "Comedy"Tanner mentioned several times Skills' role is often to provide comic relief. That doesn't seem to be changing.

Rob Buckley (Clay): "Discovery"Shantel VanSanten (Quinn): "Growth"Similar (and generic) responses from Buckley and VanSanten seem to imply that Quinn and Clay will continue to evolve — but not necessarily in the same direction.

Mark Schwahn (Creator and executive producer): "Moose"Your guess is as good as mine.

That's it! We have to wait until Jan. 11 to learn more. Until then, share what you think these words mean in the comments below!
