South Africa captain Graeme Smith will be fit for the first test against India on 16 December.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that Smith, who fractured a finger in a one-day game against Pakistan, will recover in time for the home series.

Smith has visited a hand surgeon and the CSA said it has been assured that the 29-year-old's injury is healing "within expectation".

The Proteas take on top-ranked India in three tests, five ODIs and a T20 game.

The CSA added that Smith's finger is to be assessed again in two weeks.
