Sometimes, a short description fails to do an episode justice. Balthazar (Sebastian Roche) goes back in time and keeps the Titanic from sinking, and people who never should have been born start dying horrible deaths. It sounds really stupid when it is explained like that, but this episode of "Supernatural" was surprisingly intriguing and effective.
After Balthazar's surprising good deed, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padelecki) once again find themselves in an alternate universe. Ellen (Samantha Ferris) and Jo (Alona Tal) are still alive, with Ellen married to Bobby (Jim Beaver). The Winchester boys investigate a series of bizarre deaths that are being orchestrated by one of the aspects of Fate (Katie Walder). Apparently, averting the Apocalypse has rendered Fate irrelevant.
The real question is, why does Balthazar save the Titanic? Despite a lame excuse that he hated the movie, it appears that he is under orders from Castiel (Misha Collins), who needs to replenish his arsenal of souls. by not sinking the Titanic, Sam arbitrarily assumes that this generates 50,000 souls for Castiel. How he arrived at this number is anyone's guess.
On paper, the story seems ridiculous, and in truth, it really is. Influencing history changes too many paradigms; just a few moments of introspective thought can find a multitude of holes in the logic. while a bit silly, the episode was still quite entertaining.
Points of Interest
1. while Celine Dion is a "destitute lounge singer in Quebec," the world still has Ashton Kutcher to contend with.
2. According to the posters in the travel agency, Detroit was the world's number one city, and Cuba was a hot travel destination.
3. Loved the Mustang. while the Impala is cool in its own right, I would gladly trade it for the Mustang in this episode.
What Worked
The scene where the boys were tempting fate was very effective and nicely choreographed. also, the use of Blondie's "One way or Another" as background music was incredible.
Balthazar was sneaking up to kill Fate, only to have Castiel warn her. His reply: "Well, this is awkward." Perfect comedic timing. In fact, Balthazar was quite amusing in this episode.
A Celine Dion song in a "Supernatural" episode? Not only did they play the song, but they titled the entire episode after it. I didn't know if I should put it in the "What Worked" or "What Didn't Work" section. In the end, the creativity factor won out. I have to say, I never thought I would hear Celine Dion in this series.
What Didn't Work
Going back and changing history opens a huge can of worms. If it is possible to just go back and change major historical events, it generally renders everything meaningless. while Fate admonishes Castiel that it isn't right to do so, one can't help but wonder if that would really be enough to keep anyone from doing it.
