San Mateo County health officials gave the all-clear at Surfer'sBeach at 1:40 p.m. Thursday after concerns that a sewage pipe mighthave ruptured a day earlier.

San Mateo County Environmental Health Director Dean Petersonsaid Thursday afternoon that there was no unusual bacteria found inbeach water and that signs announcing that the beach was closedwould be pulled soon.

The health scare followed a similar problem on Saturday. Workcrews spent part of Sunday repairing a sewer line in the vicinityof Coronado Street and Highway 1 after problems with a Midcoastsewer line caused raw sewage to percolate up from the ground.

On Wednesday, crews saw water on the ground near their earlierrepair and were concerned that their previous fix wasn't holding, according to a Sewer Authority Midcoastside worker on the scene onThursday. SAM notified state and county health officials about thepossibility of a new breech and worked from about 10 a.m. to 10p.m. Wednesday to determine whether they had a new leak.

"There is a possibility that it was residual (wastewater) fromSaturday's leak," said SAM director Steve Leonard. He said the flowwas "pretty good" and they vacuumed it into a truck over four hourson Wednesday. Eventually the water ran clear and the crisisappeared to be averted. Crews installed a new gauge to monitor anynew leak that might spring in the area.

Leonard said the work was complicated by the fact that ahigh-pressure PG&E gas main runs nearby.

The sewage pipeline in question is 35 years old and SAM offiialssay they are in the process of planning replacement of the entirepipe. Leonard said that work will have to wait for the dry seasonand could inconvience people in the area.

The work on underground pipes at Coronado Street backed uptraffic for miles during the evening commute on Wednesday. Coronadowas closed to all but emergency traffic and Highway 1 trafficslowed to a crawl. Officials are sure that traffic will return tonormal Thursday night, but warn that they may have to tackle theproblem again when they replace the pipe.

Leonard apologized about traffic tie-ups related to the work onSaturday and Wednesday. SAM hasn't had much experience on Caltransright-of-way, Leonard said, adding that he was sorry they didn't"button up" fast enough.
