The Hulk: Not Edward Norton, So Who?
After both Eric Bana and Edward Norton played the role just once, producers of an ‘Avengers’ movie are looking to cast the Hulk once more. Along with speculation as to who should take on the role come questions as to why Norton will not be involved.
Reports imply that the star of ‘Down in the Valley’ and ‘The Illusionist’ does not work well as part of a team. the website Edward-Norton notes his reputation for preferring to get involved at a deeper level than just acting. His re-writes are well known. this tendency to engage with the filming process is appreciated more by some than by others. E! Online reports two different stories: a mutual and amicable decision to turn down the Avengers project; or Norton being axed for being awkward to work with. Whatever the truth, the ‘Avengers’ project needs a new Hulk.
As far as entertainment news is concerned, front-runners include Joaquin Phoenix and Matthew Fox. Phoenix had reportedly given up acting to focus on music, but actors are notorious for itching to get back onto the screen when the right character presents itself. Fox could be celebrating in more ways than one if he were to land the coveted role after an Emmy nomiation at last for his role as Jack Shephard on the final season of ‘Lost’.
The other former Hulk, Eric Bana, reportedly turned down a chance of a repeat performance. according to the Australian actor, playing the comic book character was ‘un-fun’, very hard work (IMBD). whoever takes on the job of portraying angry, green Bruce Banner may also feel as though he walks into cursed green shoes which no one wants to wear twice on the big screen.
The same cannot be said about roles such as ‘Iron Man’, twice played by Robert Downey Jr. He and other talented actors are already signed up for the ‘Avengers’ movie according to Pop Watch. Notables include Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Chris Evans as Captain America. whoever stands up as Banner must be able to withstand the pressure of working with such a famous cast while also portraying Banner with the maturity his character requires. right now, Fox and Phoenix appear to be good choices. perhaps Christian Bale? Adrian Brody (currently a very physical presence in the violent ‘Predator’, a complete contrast to the often thin, cerebral characters he is known for)?
All of this waiting will create fantastic publicity for the film two years before audiences can expect to see it come out in theatres.
