The Perfect Little Black Dress

The little black dress or LBD is one of the fashion world's most beloved creations. Its origin is ascribed to Coco Chanel who simply designed a 'cut-down' version of a traditional evening dress to produce one of the most versatile and affordable pieces in a woman's wardrobe. Its enduring success is down to the fact that a black dress is such a flattering garment. It's hard to look bad in one. The fact that black makes the body look slimmer just adds to the appeal. Wearing a little black dress with heels can make a woman look taller, thinner and more glamorous than she normally would feel. Every stylish woman has, or wants to have a little black dress hidden away in her wardrobe waiting to be brought out for that special occasion.

The LBD comes in many styles. Low-cut, backless, figure-hugging, sleeveless, strapless – the list is endless. The same applies to fabrics. Lace, chiffon, sequined, satin crepe, even leather. You cannot fail to find a little black dress to suit the occasion or mood.

They are beloved of celebrities who are often seen on red carpets, wearing the latest creations by the world's top designers. Kate Beckinsdale, Charlize Theron and Jessica Simpson are all big fans.

Since the days of Coco Chanel, the LBD has evolved to such a degree that it has become versatility personified. It may have started life as the female answer to the tuxedo but it has now acquired countless looks for countless occasions. It can easily be dressed up or down and is as at home at a cocktail party as a rock festival. During the day wear it with a jacket and flat shoes and at night glam it up with statement jewellery and stilettos.

Accessorise your little black dress with killer heels, biker boots even, or simply a string of pearls like Audrey Hepburn in her iconic Givenchy LBD in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The perfect little black dress is the height of elegance but has something about it that is overtly sexy. It could be revealing just the right amount of cleavage, showing off the woman's back or is simply figure-hugging. Above all it says 'look at me'

Designers from all around the world frequently include little black dresses in their collections. Richard Nicoll, Jan Ahlgren, Victoria Beckham, Marios Schwab and Markus Lupfer all have beautiful LBDs for the current season.
