I like Blindsided by Bon Iver, two Weeks by Grizzly Bear, Hang me Up to Dry by Cold War Kids, the Funeral by Band of Horses, and 9 Crimes by Damien Rice. I know you asked for artists, but I just clicked a song I liked by Iron & Wine and made a playlist in the iTunes Genius and these were the songs that I thought might match what you are looking for. there are also iTunes Essentials in different genres, you should check those out I think there is a folk one.
