But I believe Jersey Shore starlet Snooki is the most brilliant marketer alive. And before you write me off as a nut job. or tell me that reality TV drives you up a wall. give me a minute to make my point.
To be a marketing genius you first need something to promote, right?
Something that people will pay money for.
And when you stop to think about it, what does Snooki have to promote?
In my humble opinion, Snooki's talent is her ability to promote herself despite not having much to promote.
This in my book makes her a marketing god.
Just the other day the media ran a story that Snooki might be pregnant.
When I heard it I wondered if anyone cared.
But then I saw Social Media jump on this story like a blood-thirsty vampire hops on an artery which confirmed that millions of people do care.
Maybe this says something about our society, but that aside.
Snooki's story put her back on the walk of fame once again.
And mark my words she'll do it again and again and again.
What's the lesson here for your business?
How can you tread lightly in Snooki's shoes?
Well, it demonstrates the power of the media. This is something you must do over and over again until you score some press from your local media. They want good stories for their readers and chances are you have plenty of ideas you can give them.
So here's what you do:
1) Make a list of all your media contacts in your area.
This can be TV. radio. and newspaper media contacts. And then once you get this list together, make a marketing plan to contact these folks until you get some press.
2) Contact your media at least once a month.
I like to contact them more. I shoot for at least once a week. There is not right or wrong schedule. But the more you stay in their face with good quality story ideas, the better chance you'll have to snag some press for your business.
3) Send them a press release with a story idea.
It takes a little time to learn how to write a news release right. but. once you get the model down, all you need is a few story ideas. And you're set. Send these in and see what happens.
Does this idea work immediately?
Normally it takes a little time before you snag a story from your media.
But once you do. look out. because your phone will ring and ring and ring.
