He's been working with American Airlines for a while now and just in time for the holiday season, he's done three more spots for the company, that are actually not too bad at all.

In a campaign designed to emphasize American Airlines' commitment to customer service to all kinds of different people, Spacey gears up as three wildly different people: a Dieter-esque, po-mo sort of dude; a Jeff Bridges-esque family man and, putting on some Benjamin Button makeup, an older, tea-drinking, newspaper reading retiree. And it's pretty great fun to watch him play up these different personas that certainly makes us forget that air travel — no matter who you're with — tends to be a total nightmare.

Anyhow, it's worth a few moments of your time to wind down the day. Check out the ads below.
Jewellery Designers Make Spectacular Products For The Silver Screen

Jewellery designers have been asked to submit items of costume jewellery they may have already manufactured for the film industry. Wonderful necklaces, bracelets and tiaras that have had their own starring role and adorned popular film stars are now being sought. Certainly the glimmering range of glitter and bling for the movies are paste instead of diamonds, but they make a good display.

Items by jewellery designers for films are going to be showcased at the Jewellery on Screen trade show at Somerset House on The Strand in London next June as an element of London Jewellery Week. The show has got Orkney jewellery designers considering how a lot of our typical collections ranging from mens Celtic rings to contemporary style pendants could possibly be just appropriate for the movie industry.

The Tudor range, as an example, influenced by the gemstones and superb decoration of the period, is a timeless style for films about Elizabeth I starring Cate Blanchet or Helen Mirren. And our Louise ring could well adorn the ring finger of her namesake in Thelma and Louise, played by Susan Sarandon.

Jewellery Designers in the Movies

One Orkney collection features Birdland necklaces, earrings, brooches and charms depicting birds in flight across a northern sky. Daphne du Maurier's novel, The Birds, however spawned a more terrifying view of these things – not improved by a Hitchcock horror movie starring Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor The Heart series links with numerous famous films for example the newly released Crazy Heart with Jeff Bridges. But aside from the romantic Heart there's also Braveheart, who could happily wear a lot of the mens Celtic rings or our Sword kiltpin style and design.

Sword, needless to say was an important element in a good many movies about Arthur, Camelot and Merlin. The well-known Willow design has got the same name as the quest film starring Val Kilmer and Joanne Walley and no one knows what Toad and his chums would make of it in Wind in the Willows.

The present-day piece True relates to many films for instance the kooky True Romance starring Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette or True Grit, the John Wayne or Jeff Bridges rendition. And Chanticleer, based on the saga of a rooster and a fox, might well be a nice pattern for the Fantastic Mr Fox.

There are lots of more blockbusters to choose from that we could provide models to match. Orkney might not yet be on the list of centers for jewellery designers who provide pieces for Hollywood, but a lot of our collections are donned by stars who love our style and design.

NEW YORK — The online auction site eBay (EBAY) has learned from experience what kind of excitement a lock of Justin Bieber's hair can cause.

Earlier this year, a bit of Bieber's famous bangs raised $40,668 for an animal rescue organization in an eBay auction. Such bidding has become increasingly commonplace on eBay, where the stray objects of celebrities can fetch high prices.

On Monday, eBay is launching eBay.com/Celebrity as a gathering place for such auctions. Beginning participants include Brad Pitt, Katy Perry, Sienna Miller, Cher, Jeff Bridges and Hayden Panettiere, all of whom will auction off items to raise money for their individually chosen charities.

A chance to meet Pitt will be auctioned for Make it Right, the Hurricane Katrina home-building organization. A private acting workshop with Robert Duvall will benefit the Robert Duvall Children's Fund. A red sequined dress worn by Katy Perry will raise money for the American Red Cross.

Richelle Parham, chief marketing officer of eBay North America, says eBay's charitable arm, eBay Giving Works, has raised more than $51 million for charities this year and $278 million altogether.

"We know that our customers have been coming to eBay specifically to look for and connect with their favorite charities and celebrities," says Parham. "For many years, the eBay platform has been the choice for celebrities who are looking to raise funds for their charities."

eBay won't take a percentage of these charity auctions, but the site does benefit from the generated traffic. The Bieber auction, for example, more than doubled searches for Bieber on the site and boosted revenue for Bieber-related merchandise by 36 percent.

Celebrities will have individual pages that highlight their charity of choice, as well as a "shop like a star" feature that leads to hand-picked products for sale on eBay. Katy Perry, we now know, collects cat-shaped salt-and-pepper shakers.

Their hopes for 2013 might include Superman reboot "Man of Steel" and Spartan sequel "300: Battle of Artemesia," but neither are quite home runs, and they're joined by fresh starters like Guillermo Del Toro's giant monster movie "Pacific Rim" and period witch-hunting flick "The Seventh Son," with Sam Claflin and Jeff Bridges.

And while those films get underway, another two potential tentpoles at the studio are casting up: the controversial remake of anime classic "Akira," and a new take on the Knights of the Round Table, "Arthur & Lancelot," and both find themselves chasing some big names. The former, which was confirmed to have "Tron: Legacy" star/mannequin Garret Hedlund in talks to play lead Kaneda yesterday, has been pursuing Gary Oldman to play the villainous Colonel, and Helena Bonham-Carter for Lady Miyako, and according to Heat Vision, they're joined on director Jaume Collet-Serra's shopping list by Keira Knightley.

There's no confirmation of which part it's for, but unless they're trying to really annoy the fanboys by casting her as Tetsuo, it seems likely that the star of "Atonement" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" is being sought for an equivalent part to Kei, the young revolutionary who serves as the love interest for Kaneda. Whether Knightley, or indeed Oldman or Bonham-Carter, will do it is pretty up in the air. However, the trade says that the three haven't yet "engaged" with the studio, and outside of her Disney trilogy, which she signed up for at the age of 17, the young British actress doesn't really have a tradition of taking paycheck gigs, particularly one that's likely as thankless as this. Having said that, she's currently free once she wraps Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina," but considering that "Akira" was scaled back to be made under $100 million, we don't imagine the wages are going to be massive, so there may be better offers out there.

While Oldman mulls "Akira," he's got another offer from the same studio. According to Deadline, Warners also wants the actor to play Merlin in "Arthur & Lancelot," the new version of the classic Camelot myth from "Wedding Crashers" director David Dobkin. "The Killing" star Joel Kinnaman bagged the part of Lancelot last week, with "Game of Thrones" star Kit Harrington said to be the frontrunner to play Arthur (although Deadline says that testing's soon to commence for the part) ,so it makes sense to have a safe pair of hands like Oldman to balance out younger talent. After his roles as Sirius Black and Commissioner Gordon, the studio clearly sees Oldman as a good luck charm, considering he's got both offers. And he's a regular fixture on the WB lot who isn't opposed to roles in subpar flicks—please see "Book Of Eli" and "Red Riding Hood" for further evidence.

However, while the actor does seem to have a good relationship with the studio, his career-best performance in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is tipped by many for an Oscar nomination, and the actor may want, as is common practice, to hold out for nominations in the hope of upping his quote, particularly with both projects seeming, well, kind of unappealing. We suppose we'll see down the road how it works out; we'd be surprised if the actor took both (which may not even be possible, although we're sure the studio would be happy to shuffle schedules to make it work), but taking one isn't implausible. Filming on "Akira" is set for next spring, with a 2013 release likely to follow, while "Arthur & Lancelot" will get before cameras around the same time, and has a March 15, 2013 date earmarked.

I wish I could deleted my previous posts.I think i sounded bit strange..lol I'm not sure why I cared Arthur&Lancelot; so much.It is not going to be very good film and to be forgotten.Jim Sturgess won’t star anyway. It will also waste Oldman's time and talent、if he will star. But he could earn some money though. It's not bad thing.

I'm sorry,my link doesn't work… again..Hopefully it works.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/joel_kinnaman_wins_role_of_lancelot_in_david_dobkins_arthur_lancelot/

I think "Akira" will waste his time and talent. So probably he better choose A＆L.(It has kind of mediocre director though)

(Btw,,sorry,it's not big deal though、I wonder if Kit Harrington is really frontrunner to play Arthur.I posted about it on this comment section.http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/joel_kinnaman_wins_role_of_lancelot_in_david_dobkins_arthur_lancelot/#comments)

Don't you just lurve how blogs sound so "insider"…when they are anything but.

actually, Sam Claflin is not in The Seventh Son anymore. Ben Barnes was cast.

Look at all these beautiful white faces…

Asians, this is what Hollywood thinks of you. Take note… again… again… and again…

The Men Who Stare at Goats (Grant Heslov, 2009) – In George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey, and Ewan MacGregor, The Men Who Stare at Goats stars four men who have all more than proven their abilities as lead actors. It is directed by Grant Heslov who had previously co-written the screenplay for Clooney's smart, slick Good Night and Good Luck, and was rewarded with an Oscar nomination. With this pedigree, one would expect great things. Alas, Heslov demonstrates an infirm grasp of what is strongest in his material and how to bring out the best in his cast. Saddled with an undercooked and by-the-numbers screenplay by Peter Straughan, Helsov never finds the right tone nor stays long enough on the scenes that allow his actors to really shine and bring out complexity in their characters. Instead, it has the schizophrenic editing of an 18 minute TV show cut to fit in between commercials, which results in scenes having very light impact on the viewer.

Ewan MacGregor's Bob Wilton is a journalist from Ann Arbor, Michigan, looking for a career-making story in Iraq. This leads him to meet Clooney's Lyn Cassidy at a hotel in Kuwait, who claims to be on a secret mission from his old mentor Bill Django (Jeff Bridges). But before we actually can get into that, we must sit through a framing story where we learn about Bob's boredom with his day job and his recent separation from his wife who dumped him for his editor. His desire to break a huge story in Iraq, we are told, is primarily motivated by his desire to win his wife back. Neither we nor the filmmakers actually care about this framing story, and it seems utterly useless to the narrative.

Soon Bob is absorbed by Lyn's insane stories of how Django founded the New Earth Army unit by first becoming a New Age hippie, represented in an over-summarized flashback montage, and then returning to the real US Army to take what he learned about peace, love, and the connectedness of all things and apply it to a special new unit under his control. They practice things like the sparkly-eyes technique, remote viewing and hanging heavy objects from their testicles. Django has no use for the formalities of the military and gets his recruits, including his prize student Lyn and the vaguely evil Larry Hooper (Kevin Spacey), to loosen up by dancing. In a dancing scene that rivals Julia Louise-Dreyfus's performance as Elaine in Seinfeld, Clooney embarrasses himself to hilarious effect. Clooney is never funnier than when he is making his character look like an idiot, and he has a lot of fun with these scenes, during which his character dons long curly hair in keeping with the unit's nontraditional ethos and his character's supposed age (the film, wisely, never really bothers to make the three older leads look their age in the flashbacks). It's a shame that this and other scenes of Django's unit training are done in such a shorthand manner, from which we keep breaking away in order to follow Bill and Lyn's adventures in modern-day Iraq. These Iraq scenes confuse the narrative with political commentary that feels neither authentic nor fully sussed-out. Worse, it takes screen time away from watching the older leads play goofball scenes off each other, which is what we really want to see.

Soon, Django's bizarre New Age teachings are put to a stop. Kevin Spacey's character, who up until now has been characterized by his funny eccentricities, secretly begins warped experiments on an innocent soldier who he dosed with LSD and then subjected to all sorts of scary stimuli. The soldier flips out and puts a gun to his head. The shift to such a dark tone is sudden and jarring. The film then depicts the army brass, portrayed as party-spoiling meanies, cracking down on the wrong guy, and our heroic saint, Django, is subsequently kicked out of the army through no fault of his own (although one would think after all his violations of decorum he would have been reprimanded all the time).

Heslov is searching for a tone that credibly presents childish silliness as a tonic for American imperial warmongers. I suppose such a tone could exist, but Heslov does not find it. Instead, Bridges's buffoonery seems ignorant and dangerous, Spacey's character's evilness is random and ungrounded, leaving us a bad taste in our mouths without giving us a reason to rally against him, and MacGregor's character is never anything more than a device used by the screenwriter. Clooney is the actor here who lifts the film above the material. Clooney first plays Lyn Cassidy in his wild-eyed comedian mode (see Oh Brother Where Art Thou?) and then gradually reveals dark psychological shades which posit his delusional devotion to Django and his teachings as filling a deep need for a hero in a world that too often disappoints. This is a potentially powerful characterization which rests on a too-flimsy foundation of a film, and becomes unfortunately coupled with some sort of confused anti-war message.

As for what that message is, I would hazard to guess that, while having a standing Army and getting involved in overseas conflicts might be necessary, we should go about conducting such activities in ways where we don't take ourselves too seriously, and don't do any harm to people, such as innocent Iraqis, for whom we are supposedly fighting. Apparently, most of the types of things we see Django's outfit do were actually done in the Army, in something called the First Earth Battalion. In the documentary that accompanies the film on DVD, we hear former members of said battalion recount that remote viewing was used and resulted in remarkably accurate descriptions of possible military targets. Given the scary implications of this revelation, it seems incredibly sophomoric for the film to take the view that these New Age hippies just wanted to spread love, and we should all be more like them. If anything, the film should be asking how the Army could allow remote viewing to be an official practice, and was any action ever taken as a result of it?

Hollywood has touched down in the Boston area this month with the shooting of the new film R.I.P.D in Charlestown. This is the second big movie in Charlestown since The Town with Ben Affleck.

R.I.P.D stars Kevin Bacon, Ryan Reynolds, and “the dude” himself Jeff Bridges have been spotted shooting scenes near Pleasant street in the town. This is a description of the movie from IMBD:

“A recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him. Based on the comic by Peter M. Lenkov.”

The movie will also see an appearance from the very lovely Marissa Miller according to its IMBD page as well. This makes the film worth seeing for sure.

The film is being directed by Robert Schwentke who is a German director who is also known for the movie Red and The Time Travelers Wife.

As you can see from the photo below the film will also feature some car chase scenes with a very bad ass Dodge Challenger SRT8. There are multiple Dodges on set and Ryan Reynolds has been seen mashing the gas in the horsepower happy Dodge.

The story of True Grit is an excellent source for a movie adaptation and the Coen Brothers retain the storytelling prowess they've always possessed with their vision of this epic tale of retribution. It still feels like a remake though, with every major event (as well as most of the minor ones) from the 1969 film finding its way into the script. Little has changed, save for the cast, and while the characters are handled well by the seasoned crew, it's unlikely their performances will hold up against the adoration of John Wayne and the original film. Even without comparing the leads between the two, this latest Rooster Cogburn is afflicted with such slurred speech and sonorous grumbling that intelligently written banter is lost to humorously unintelligible ramblings – this vocal setback plagues many of the other characters too. Hailee Steinfeld offers an entertaining precociousness and Matt Damon revels in his arrogant Texas Ranger, but it's nearly impossible not to recall the performances of Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Perhaps the Coen Brothers' True Grit will find favor with those unfamiliar with the original – unfortunately those viewers have already missed out.

When her father is gunned down in cold blood by the treacherous Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) determines to see justice done no matter the cost. Searching out the meanest, orneriest Marshal she can find, Mattie hires Reuben J. Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to hunt down Chaney in the harsh wilderness of Indian territory. Much to the lawman's dismay, Mattie insists on accompanying him, as does cocky Texas Ranger La Boeuf (Matt Damon), seeking out his own unrelated bounty on the man, leading the mismatched trio to begin a dangerous quest for vengeance.

The Coen Brothers' newest film is just begging for comparison to both the original novel by Charles Portis and the 1969 film adaptation. It's incredibly difficult to judge it on its own merits considering just about everything it accomplishes is immensely derivative. While this version follows the book closely, the changes aren't different enough from Henry Hathaway's earlier film, resulting in an attempt that for all intents and purposes, might as well have been a shot-for-shot remake. Many of the scenes are nearly identical, and much of the dialogue is the exact same, including the climactic showdown catchphrase which is cringe-worthy for fans of John Wayne's unforgettable delivery. It can't even top Strother Martin's minor supporting role, this time portrayed by Dakin Matthews.

Jeff Bridges' Rooster Cogburn isn't so much a new interpretation of the marshal from the book, but a variation on John Wayne's performance. This is unfortunate because while Bridges portrays a memorable, likeable character, he hasn't really displayed something creatively fresh for audiences. The language used is perhaps more authentic, but resultantly harder to understand, and the strained lack of spoken contractions doesn't flow well with the contemporary camerawork, lighting and effects. The only real improvements are the costumes and props, which were undoubtedly blessed with larger budgets and extensive attention to details.

True Grit is an exciting story with intriguing characters and therefore exceptional material for a screenplay. But it doesn't mean that it should be redone when it was already successfully adapted 41 years ago with an indelible actor that won an Oscar for his efforts. Especially when the filmmakers have nothing new to bring to the table, outside of an alternate cast and bringing back the bookending of familiar characters with detached, older versions of themselves, for the sake of following the novel – a trick that sadly distances viewers from the roles they're accustomed to.

I'm a huge fan of the movie with John Wayne, and I'm looking forward to the newer adaption with Jeff Bridges playing 'Rooster' Cogburn. However, when the new movie came out a few months ago, I read an article in Newsweek, that focused more on the book True Grit by Charles Portis than the two movies made from his most famous book written in 1968. The article mentioned both movies, but went on to discuss the merits of the novel, and encouraged readers to read the novel before seeing the movie. I thought that was good advice, so I got me a copy and worked it into my reading.

I read it this week, and found it to be a very enjoyable read. It's a short book, and very easy to get lost in the well written story. What I didn't realize until I started reading was the book is written in the voice of Mattie Ross, the fourteen-year-old girl from Dardanell, Arkansas, who sets out to avenger the murder of her father.

Many who have seen the movie, or movies, are familiar with the story. Mattie convinces the meanest U.S. Marshal she can find, one with grit, to accompany her to track her father's killer. Of course, the convinces him through a pay check. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who is also after the same man for different crimes. What comes next is a fast paced adventure that proves that Cogburn isn't the only person with grit. And while one-eyed Marshal Cogburn is the memorable character, especially when played by Oscar winners Wayne (for this movie) and Bridges, the story really is about the young girl Mattie.

It is her thoughts, fears, wit, and personality that we share when reading. She's quite the confident and self-reliant young lady, but also needs the two men she connects with to complete her adventure. The conclusion of the book is not one of happiness, but neither is life, and it is a satisfying ending for the story.

Portis deserves the praise he's received for this novel. It's a moving and engaging story, told with dramatic simplicity and directness that is refreshing, gripping, and the reason the two movies have been successful. Yes, the movies had great actors, but it is the underlying story that made the movies what they are. I agree with Newsweek in that you should read this book. If you enjoyed either of the movies, do yourself a favor and read the book.

Garden City resident and photographer, Victoria Canore was on hand at the Red carpet at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, the location of the big event to document the return of the BIG LEBOWSKI stars. Victoria, a NYC credentialed photographer and radio correspondent for IN FOCUS, a talk, news, sports and entertainment program on WVOX 1460AM has been fortunate to photograph some of the most interesting people, including President Bill Clinton, Governors David Paterson and Andrew Cuomo, NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg, former mayors David Dinkins and Ed Koch and a host of other elected officials, entertainers, and sports figures from the New York Mets and the New York Jets and most recently the crew of astronauts from the Atlantis, the last NASA shuttle flight.

On Tuesday night Ms. Canore was able to capture the cast in full, including John Turturro, Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi.

The fans were treated to an hour-long Q&A with the stars sitting in cushioned loves seats. The former cast romped around the stage in good fun offering some of their personal reactions to their experiences related to making the movie as well as the fan reactions a decade later. The film hit the movie theaters in 1998 and has become has created a cult following.

Following the movie hundreds of the Big Lebowski movie fans went bowling just like the characters did in the film. Many of the movie fans attending the special program came dressed in bowling outfits similar to the ones worn by the stars in the 1998 film.

We're advocates of alleviating the afternoon slump. Consider this the written equivalent of your favorite venti latte… only stronger!

SINGLE SHOT: SITES WE LOVE!

Queen Latifah's upcoming line for the Home Shopping Network will showcase her penchant for biker gear, which she'd love to dress Kate Middleton in. Honestly, nothing would make me happier than seeing the Duchess of Cambridge revving up on a Harley.
"High-ranking industry sources" have confirmed to The Daily that Marc Jacobs will take over as creative director at Dior, the position previously held by John Galliano. Seriously, guys? Enough with the gossip. Just make an announcement already. [The Daily]

In light of his resignation from his longtime post as CEO of Apple, it is important to commemorate the style of Steve Jobs, and his consistent, passionate relationship with the mock turtleneck.
If you're a Madewell maven, get excited: the brand is launching a catalog on August 27. If it's anything like sister-brand J. Crew's classic mag, this means good things all around.
They say that June's videos have “True Grit” — literally. The Coen Brothers' remake sticks closer to Charles Portis' novel than the John Wayne version and fits their style perfectly: strong visuals, rich dialogue, sly wit and sudden brutality. Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld star in this celebration of gloriously outmoded lingo in which people cannot pronounce a contraction to save their lives.

The lush score is based on hymns, especially “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.” This links the movie to two great pieces of Americana about children who face loss: “The Human Comedy” and “The Night of the Hunter.” They'd make an interesting marathon.

For another scary battle of wills, a special agent toys brutally with a psycho in South Korea's “I Saw the Devil.” This unpleasant thriller has extraordinary set pieces, including a car scene dizzier than the one in “Children of Men.” A kind of musical with bone-crunching instead of dancing, it imagines a world where every other person is a serial killer, so you wonder why anyone leaves the house.

The evil stepmother of all twisty thrillers, “Diabolique” (1955) comes in a spruced-up Criterion disc. The tale still hums like clockwork, zooming in and out with precision, and the climax is textbook shooting and editing of a horror scene. Scholars discuss the fact that the novel is totally different and point out the connections to “Psycho,” including bathroom mayhem.

“Henri-George Clouzot's Inferno” documents an unfinished 1964 film by the maker of “Diabolique.” It was going to interrupt its black-and-white scenes with experimental, gorgeously colored fantasies of a jealous husband. If even half the footage here had been used, it would have been a psychedelic milestone.

Was there something about 1964? More dark obsessions, more modernism, and more vivid black and white mark “Pale Flower,” the doomed romance of a yakuza hit man and a spoiled heiress addicted to gambling. Toru Takemitsu's score mixes dissonance, tap dancing, ambient sounds and, in the most startling scene, the famous aria from Purcell's “Dido and Aeneas.”

Getting away from crazy folks, Kon Ichikawa's “The Makioka Sisters” is a relaxed, richly colored glimpse of Japanese marriage and family on the eve of World War II. Based on Junichiro Tanizaki's epic novel, it's a work of beautiful oblivion that depends on the audience's knowledge of how much will be swept away.

That's another Criterion disc, along with Nicolas Roeg's “Insignificance,” a chamber piece that imagines Marilyn Monroe (Theresa Russell) meeting Albert Einstein (Michael Emil) in a hotel room with Joe DiMaggio (Gary Busey) and Sen. Joe McCarthy (Tony Curtis!). Marilyn explains the theory of relativity.

San Antonio siren

What if Lucy Ricardo were more like Ricky? She'd be forgotten star Lupe Velez, some of whose films are now on Warner Archives' made-on-demand site. Born to a wealthy Mexican family, she attended S.A.'s Our Lady of the Lake convent school before becoming a star of Hollywood silents.

In talkies, her accent limited her to exotic nonsense like “Kongo,” with Walter Huston as a phony witch doctor. Her comic timing can be seen in “Strictly Dynamite,” with Jimmy Durante, and the eight entries in “The Mexican Spitfire Collection,” where Velez plays a singer who marries an uptight Yankee.

Political correctness has obscured her as a stereotype, but being fierce, resourceful, impolite, sexy and loud isn't so bad. She's abetted by Leon Errol, often hilarious in dual roles. She'd be better known except that she staged an elaborate suicide in 1944. Can a biopic be far behind?

Blu-Ray alerts

“Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2006)” contains all four Christopher Reeve movies (including alternate versions of the first two) and the recent “Superman Returns,” plus “Superman vs. the Mole Men” (1951), the Max Fleischer cartoons, TV specials, a “Superpup” pilot and a whole disc of filler. In other words, it's the contents of the 2006 DVD box plus the latest movie and more extras, now in HD.

Milos Forman's “Hair” and Martin Scorsese's “New York New York” are late-model musicals with remarkable moments. The former has dancing horses and marching soldiers; the latter has Liza Minnelli eerily channeling her mom while Robert DeNiro plays sax and sniffs coke.

“A Clockwork Orange” isn't a musical, but it's got Beethoven and “Singin' in the Rain.” A second disc has docs on director Stanley Kubrick and actor Malcolm McDowell. It's also in “Stanley Kubrick: The Essential Collection” (and the pricier “Limited Edition Collection”), with “Spartacus,” “Lolita,” “Dr. Strangelove,” “2001,” “Barry Lyndon,” “The Shining,” “Full Metal Jacket” and “Eyes Wide Shut.”

With far fewer extras but packaged in a nice book is John Huston's adventure epic “The Man Who Would Be King” with Michael Caine and Sean Connery.

The Movie Reviews score: 7.2 out of 10

Although Tron: Legacy has some great special effects, it is not as good or as groundbreaking as the original Tron. Tron: Legacy definitely has its good moments and bad moments. Jeff Bridges, who I like as an actor, gave a decent performance but had some really corny "hippie" lines throughout the movie. I suppose that fits in with the zen-like character he has become, but it still comes off as corny. Special effects did a good job digitizing Bridges to give him a younger face, but it is still pretty obvious that it is digital and not his real face. other special effects and certain parts of the story I did enjoy, but there were definitely some flaws there.

The story begins explaining Flynn's (Bridges) disappearance shortly after the original Tron movie takes place. His son is now in his 20s and is rebellious since his Dad disappeared. He doesn't like the what has happened to his Dad's company either and has taken to pulling a yearly prank on the company. Cillian Murphy's character now runs Flynn's company. I was disappointed that he was only in the movie for about 5 minutes. I also thought it was kind of funny that Murphy would take such a small role in the movie. Anyway, Alan (Tron's "User"), who still holds a prominent position in the company, tells Sam (Flynn's son) that he somehow received a page from his Dad and urges him to check out the source, which is Flynn's old abandoned arcade. at the arcade, Sam unexpectedly gets transported to the computer world just like his father did in the first Tron. then the fun begins.

The movie reviews for Tron: Legacy were definitely mixed. Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars and said, "the artificial world is wonderfully well-rendered" and the movie provides "visual excitement." However, he calls the plot a "catastrophe." Four star blog also gave it a 3 out of 4 and calls it a "blast." they also praise Jeff Bridges performance. Reelviews was less complimentary as they called it "superficial eye candy" and also said "they had 28 years and this is the best they could come up with?" Imdb.com users currently rate the movie at 7.0 out of 10. Netflix users give it a 3.8 out of 5 stars while Blockbuster users give it a 3.5 out of 5.

While I didn't think the plot was quite a "catastrophe" I definitely thought it was just average. I can see how some people wouldn't like this movie, but being a sci-fi movie fan I thought that, overall, Tron:Legacy was worth watching and was a fun movie, despite all its flaws.

With True Grit the Coen Brotehrs' play to a genre for the first time in their long and exemplary career but when it's the Coens, even the straight and simple Western undergoes a transformation.

14-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) has lost her father and the law of the land is too lazy and too busy to chase the killer Ton Chaney (Josh Brolin) who has taken off. Mattie settles her father's business deals, arranges for his funeral but won't return home till Chaney meets justice and so she decides to hire the services of US Marshall Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) simply because he's the most ruthless one out there.

She approaches him but Rooster shrugs the teenager off. while she tries to convince Rooster she is propositioned by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) to team up as he's on Chaney's trail as well. she refuses LaBoeuf's offer but much to her dismay the two men take off without telling her and decide to split the reward. Rooster's only keen in catching Chaney and doesn't care where he's tried but Mattie won't have it any other way and tells the men that she will kill Chaney once they catch him. Following a disagreement LaBoeuf goes his own way and Mattie finally comes face to face with her father's murderer. she looks over her shoulder for Rooster but a hung-over Rooster is no match for Chaney who along with Lucky Ned (Barry Pepper) takes Mattie hostage. would Rooster the man they say with true grit manage to keep his word given to a 14-year-old who trusted him?

Rather than keeping things black and white as most classic westerns end up doing, the Coen Brothers keep their version of True Grit very true to the book and very real. At the core True Grit wouldn't have worked as wonderfully as it does had it not been for Hailee Steinfeld's very credible performance. she brings a certain sense of audacity to Mattie Ross which makes you want to root for her.

The original True Grit might be recalled largely for John Wayne's histrionics but Jeff Bridges comes up with a towering interpretation of his own. there are places where one can't understand just what the hell Rooster's saying thanks to the crazy southern drawl Bridges has but the nonchalance with which he portrays the larger than life Cogburn makes it difficult to not like him.

Matt Damon's restrained LaBoeuf is the weakest performance of the lot and let's just say your fears of it being difficult to imagine Damon play a western character were not entirely incorrect. Josh Brolin as the fugitive Tom Chaney has a mesmerizing effect and so does Barry Pepper as Lucky Ned.

Any Coen Brothers' films is nothing short of great cinema in the truest sense of the word but True Grit is a visual treat that ends up being an experience of a lifetime. Roger Deakins' superior cinematography has made many a Coen Brothers' film come alive but True Grit is Deakins' shinning hour. Just like the brothers take storytelling to a level only a few can even dream of, one frame of Roger Deakins is usually worth a million words and you have to see True Grit to know what the visual medium is capable of.

Much like no Country for Old Men, True Grit burns on a slow fire. while no Country for Old Men hits you like a bullet very early on, True Grit takes it own sweet time in working its way on your mind. the film isn't the western that you have gotten used to; not at all. with the Coens even the phonebook can changes into something magical. for most of its time you don't even notice the manner in which True Grit sucks you in; you happily tag along and might lose interest as well at places but suddenly there comes a point where the drama that is unfolding in front of you sucks you into its world and there's no coming back then.

The last 20 minutes of True Grit is where everything comes together in a manner you least expect. the film might not work for some viewers for it's not fireworks in the conventional sense of the word but watch it nevertheless and get enthralled.

An Academy Awards advertising blitz is about to hit your local drugstore or movie rental station NOW.

Okay, maybe not exactly now. But once the envelopes are opened and co-hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco announce tonight's lineup of winners (be it The King's Speech or Black Swan for "Best Picture" or Jeff Bridges or Jesse Eisenberg for best lead actor), the celebratory advertising glamor that is the pomp and circumstance of the Academy Awards will, in all likelihood, trickle its way into your closest movie rental outlet.

Why so? History (the Academy Awards is now in its 83rd year) suggests there is some marketing value to snagging an Oscars win, but only if the recipients play it right. Here's how winning–or even being nominated for–an Oscar can benefit:

*The opportunity to become a household name. True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld is up for an Academy Award (best female supporting actress), as is Jesse Eisenberg (best male actor) for his portrayal of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in last year's social networking film hit, the Social Network. Both were relatively unknown around this time of the year in 2010, as David Schwab, managing director of Octagon first Call, a celebrity and entertainment marketing firm, points out. An Academy Awards nomination–based on their most recent film credits–"turned them into household names," he says. So much so that Eisenberg appeared in a well-remembered Saturday Night Live segment last month with the real life Zuckerberg and Andy Samberg, a SNL cast member who's also impersonated the Facebook executive in comic skits. An Oscars nomination–even if one doesn't win–can propel a celebrity onto the "'short list' of directors, writers and marketers," Schwab writes.

*Endorsements, endorsements! Adrien Brody, whose lead performance in 2002's the Pianist notched him both an Oscar win as well as the record for being the youngest Best Actor Academy Awards winner (then 29-years-old) went on to score several advertising endorsements, including starring in campaigns for Ermenegildo Zegna, Diet Coke and, most recently, Anheuser-Busch's Super Bowl XLV Stella Artois ad, as Schwab notes. the same could perceivably happen for this year's breakout star.

*A seal of approval. An Oscar win gives winners a small, but notable point of difference in today's crowded film market. It can even plus up an okay film or get you to give a film a second chance.

"Oscar wins often result in short-term re-releases, a kind of you- couldn't-be bothered (weren't interested) to-see-it-in-first-run-now's-your-chance" bump, quips Robert Passikoff, founder of new York-based brand consultancy Brand Keys. not to mention the "extra dough a DVD or Blu Ray can generate from" an Academy Award win, he adds.

Uh-huh. But only if you win, right? Schwab, of Octagon, says that' s not necessarily so.

The nomination spotlight an actor receives can be just as rewarding–ROI-wise, that is. many Oscars nominees often undertake a coast-to-coast or global press trip, the Hollywood equivalet of a presidential campaign, so to speak, which gives them significant exposure time in front of "studios, producers, brand and the general public," Schwab says. (Read: earned media impressions.)

And, even if one plays the cards right, winning isn't a guarantee to long-term success. If anything, the award–the film industry's highest honor–bestows credibility on the recipient, but one has to continue working just as hard. "It’s a point of distinction, something to add to one’s brand, but it's important to stay real, active and cooperative for long term partnerships and opportunites. otherwise, you become difficult and not bankable," he says.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Adrien Brody was the youngest Academy Awards winner. He is the youngest Best Actor Oscar win, as several of my readers pointed out. Thanks!
